$AUD50,000 FOR WORLD RECORD AT IRONMAN WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Race organizers of the Ironman Western Australia triathlon, IMG, have announced a $AUD50,000 bonus to the first athlete to break the world record at this year’s race on December 2, 2007. The men’s record, held by Belgium’s Luc Van Lierde is 7:50:27 which he performed at the height of his career in 1997 at Roth. T he women’s fastest time owned by legend Paula Newby-Fraser over the 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and run 42.2km run is 8:50:53. Ironman Western Australia is considered an ideal event for elite athletes to attempt to break the world record, as it is a fast, flat course that is wind protected for much of the distance. Many consider Ironman Western Australia to be the fastest Ironman course in the world, which may be a factor in the event attracting a world class field.

In 2006, race winner Jason Shortis clocked a time of 8:03 (the fastest recorded on Australian soil) in good conditions, and is returning again this year to try and better his mark. With a $50,000 bonus on offer it is expected that he will have many challengers to his crown. 2005 champion Mitch Anderson has also confirmed his entry to the event while negotiations are progressing with South Africa’s Raynard Tissink.

I CAN’T WAIT TO GET BACK TO OZ!

After missing Ironman Australia in Port Macquarie last year I’m very excited to come back in 2008. Last April while being here in the US during race time I had a pretty empty feeling. Empty because I wasn’t at one of my most favourite events in the world with some of the greatest people.

IMG has welcomed me back with open arms and I am very fortunate to be able to be a small part of your Ironman experience, especially at that great finish line.

I know I’ll see some of you this October in Kona and April 2008 will be here before we know it. And as I always say Ironman is a universal language that bonds everyone together in a special family. You also know what else I say and hopefully you’ll here it when your dream comes true at the finish!

Keep Training,

Mike Reilly

Campbell’s Shepparton Half Ironman now takes on the Victorian Long Course Championships status and secures additional sponsors…

The Shepparton race on Sunday 18 th November, falls perfectly in the traditional racing calendar and allows for early validation for the 2008 Australian Ironman.

November is ideal for great weather conditions, and the proven course has the record for the fastest Half Ironman time in Australia. Shepparton provides for a great weekend escape, with plenty to do in the region and it also provides for a sprint distance and kids event on the same weekend. Perfect for the family getaway.

There is a strong emphasis on team entries this year, and each team member receives a t-shirt and race towel on completion.
