WORLD CLASS FIELD BEING ASSEMBLED FOR SNAP IRONMAN 70.3 GEELONG
The Snap Ironman 70.3 Geelong, to be held on February 10, 2008 is beginning to assemble a world class field for the 1.9km swim, 90km cycle and 21.1km run event. Both the men’s and women’s professional field is attracting some of the best half Ironman athletes in the World.
In the men’s race, Ironman 70.3 specialist Victoria’s Chris Legh, who is the ambassador of the Geelong race, is set to take on fellow Victorian Luke Bell. Both Legh and Bell have won numerous Ironman 70.3 events in the USA over the past two years.
“I am looking forward to racing a world class event in my own state,” says Bell.
“The race fits in perfectly with my planned season and it will be great to get a hard race under my belt before I head back to the US.”
Legh arrives home from Boulder, Colorado on December 19 and will quickly turn his focus to the final race of the Snap Australian Half Ironman series.
“I have been skiing in Colorado for the past week as a wind down from a long season. But I am looking forward to getting home and start focusing on Geelong,” said Legh.
Former Geelong Grammar student Mitch Anderson has also confirmed his entry, and with his superb form shown at Ironman Western Australia earlier this month, Anderson is expected to challenge for the win.
Also on the starting line on Corio Bay will be Australian Craig McKenzie who recently placed fourth at Ironman Western Australia. He will be looking to carry his good form into the February race as will WA’s Courtney Ogden who placed eighth at the Busselton race.
With more signings expected over the coming weeks the men’s elite field looks like assembling the best race line up seen in Australia for a half Ironman event in many years.
Not to be out done, the women’s race is also shaping up to be a star-studded field with current Ironman Australia champion Rebekah Keat confirming she will use Ironman 70.3 as part of her lead up to her title defense at Ironman Australia on April 6, 2008.
“ Geelong looks like being a real challenge and it will be ideal for the lead in to Port Macquarie,” said Keat from her Gold Coast home.
Joining Keat will be this year’s Hawaii Ironman third place finisher Kate Major, who has returned home to Australia early to also prepare for the Panthers Ironman Australia. Former Olympian and recent Gold Coast Half Ironman winner, Queenslander Rina Hill has also confirmed her entry in Geelong.
Add in Snap Half Ironman series leader Lisa Marangon, Geelong’s own Belinda Harrison who along with Legh is the ambassador for the race and Charlotte Paul who recently won her first Ironman in Western Australia and the race looks set to be a tight affair.
The Geelong Ironman 70.3 is part of the world wide series that qualifies athletes for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Florida. Geelong has 75 qualifying spots to the event. In November this year over 50 athletes from Australia attended the world championship which saw Australia’s own Mirinda Carfrae crowned as world champion.
