IRONMAN RACES DROP COMPULSORY MEMBERSHIP OF TRIATHLON AUSTRALIA (TA)

After 15 years as an entry condition to race Ironman Australia and 4 years to race Ironman Western Australia, IMG has decided to remove the requirement of full TA membership.

IMG believes that their “education” program over this time has been long enough to convince Ironman competitors of the benefits of full TA membership. More importantly there is now a need for flexibility and give a choice to our customers especially those many people who find the added cost of full membership to be a burden and we need to alleviate this burden for them.

The reality is that many competitors choose to only race 1 or 2 triathlons in a season and the best alternative is TA’s One Day Race Membership (ODRM).

The other reality is that Ironman Australia and Ironman Western Australia are the only triathlons in the country requiring all competitors to be full members to compete.

It is expected that the majority will continue to take out full membership. Those who choose not to will be required to take out the ODRM but at the very reduced cost. This type of “membership” is part of TA’s sanctioning procedures and requirements.

IMG will continue to support TA and the State Associations (STTAs) in encouraging competitors to become full members. IMG recognises the advantages of full membership versus the ODRM and that costs can balance out where competitors race more than 3 or 4 triathlons in a season.

A ODRM will cost anywhere from $20 to $40 for a Half Ironman and now an Ironman race. Add to this one or two other shorter races and full membership can be the better option. A ODRM provides for personal liability and injury insurance cover for the duration of the actual race.
